Pop art is an applied science, from point A to point B, from the beginning to the end of a song, since that’s all there is – songs. The rest depends on what you’re running on. Dragon Rapide, after their début album as statement of intent – See the Big Picture, that’s what we’re aiming at – the British Isles and North America –, is still running on the art of the (power) trio: a fat, gungy bass, combined drums and percussions forming a Haçienda-like wall from Glasgow to New York, and guitars. Guitars front, back, and everywhere, perfect guitars, reminiscent of R.E.M and Teenage Fanclub, reminiscent of Gang of Four and Johnny Marr, reminiscent of “modern life sucks” – maybe, and still, because they aren’t nostalgic, but out of time. These guitars will always be wonderfully modern, wonderfully out of time, wonderfully un-nostalgic when our children’s grandchildren’s bones will have turned to dust for myriads of kalpas.
None of this would be significant without the songs. And Dragon Rapide, rubbish at concepts, bad at name-dropping, incompetent at coolness, with their psychedelic-coloured, baggy-like power pop, offer the best collection of songs of our seasons, served by two singers whose lead and backing vocals are dealt with a communicative joy. And it’s so good we can’t help dancing. What’s more, hidden inside, you’ll find a cover of Aimee Mann so perfect you’d swear it is, too, a Dragon Rapide song.

From its base in Clermont-Fd, Dragon Rapide loves American independent rock from the 90s and this subtle mix of melodies and distortions combining the freshness of pop with the energy of punk.
Great, thrashing, melodic indie rock from this Illinois group that juxtaposes sugary vocal hooks with barbed guitars. Bandcamp New & Notable May 28, 2022
Terrific jangle pop with an edge, somewhere between Television Personalities and R.E.M. with a bit of Kinks in there, too. Bandcamp New & Notable Nov 2, 2023
